House moving is a huge task. Thinking about it just puts you off. Procrastination and delaying means that you'll be worse off than if you start packing early to avoid unnecessary stress and rush.

Pack your items that are seasonal in use first of all. Seasonal clothing and decorations are the first into your boxes. Get rid of things that you don't need anymore. If you must, take pictures of your old but favorite stuff and keep only the photographs as your mementos. Donate re-usable stuff to charities. You don't need physical junk to mess up your new home.

Pack light things into a big box as more of them weigh less. This way, the box will be manageable for you to carry. Please avoid overloading your boxes. You may cause injury to your spine.

As you pack, have your pen or marker handy for labeling your boxes. You may also want to list the contents of each box on its sides. This saves you time searching for "lost" items.

For fragile items, cushion and line the box with crushed newspaper and wrap individual items with newspaper.

For big or bulky items that can't go into boxes, carry them individually. If you need to dismantle furniture or the like, keep all the screws and necessary parts in an envelope and tape this onto its owner. This way, you won't misplace screws or be mystified as to which crews go into what item.

Pack all your daily essential belongings into a separate box and label this properly. You can keep this as your last box to be moved into your new home. If possible, this goes with you into your car. You'll be needing this box almost immediately after you enter into your new home.

For all your important documents and valuables, keep them in a safe deposit box. If you're moving out of town, bring these along in a special bag. Never leave that bag out of sight. It is best to take care of your monetary assets yourself.

While packing, if you come across any item that's borrowed, now is the time to return them. You'll have less stuff to pack and unpack. If you're using a professional mover, your job is much easier. Remember to have people stationed at your old house and new house on standby to see off the goods and receive the goods respectively. It is your responsibility to ensure that nothing is left behind by the movers and your shifted boxes are not stolen before you arrive.

If you have schooling kids, you need to take care of their schooling changes. This depends on where you're moving to. For power, utilities and other deliveries, check with them to arrange for a suitable cut-off date to avoid inconvenience to yourself.
