Did you know that the skin is the human body's largest organ? All animals with backbones have skin covering their entire body. Skin not only protects the organs of the body, but it also allows for sweating which helps to regulate the temperature fo the human body. Our skin is made up of three layers which are called the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous fatty tissue layer.

Your skin is subject to the harsh rays of the sun, especially if you are a sun worshiper, and lay out to get a dark tan, and it can sustain damage in other ways too. Depending on your job, your skin can come in contact with harsh cleaning chemicals, dirt, grime, and grease. Even when you are relaxing and having fun, like swimming in a pool, your body can come in contact with chlorine and other harsh chemicals that are sometimes found in swimming pools.

Now that you know a little bit about your skin, learn some more by finding out how you can take care of your sensitive skin. Every person should follow the same basic skin care routine for their face. However, for a person with sensitive skin, there are some differences.

The steps of basic facial skin care should be done on a daily basis. The first step is to clean off any makeup that you may have applied to your face. Use tissues or cotton balls to remove most of the makeup. You can then remove any makeup residue by washing your face with a mild soap or cleanser. There are beauty soaps on the market that contain lanolin and other softening agents that work well. Avoid soaps or cleansers that contain harsh chemicals or ingredients that might dry your face or irritate your sensitive skin. These include cleansers which contain alcohol and the like.

Next, if you washed your face with soap, now, cleanse your face with a mild face cleanser. You should use a cleanser that will remove all of the dirt, and basic pollution off of your face without drying your facial skin or changing the pH balance.

The next step is to use a toner on your face. A good toner should make your face feel smooth and refreshed. It will tighten the pores in the face and make your skin look smoohter. Again, beware of products that contain harsh ingredients. If your face is very sensitive, you may have to avoid any type of products that contain dyes, colorings, or scents, as they can and do irritate sensitive skin. Alot of toners contain alcohol or some form of it. Again, avoid these ingredients. Choose a toner that will not irritate or dry your sensitive skin.

Men should choose shaving creams that contain aloe vera, baby oil,or some other type of gentle formula. Most after shaves contain alcohol, so a man may choose to forego the scent for the sake of their face. There are a few products on the market which a man with sensitive skin can use.

As for the rest of the body, soaps, shampoos, body cleansers, bath oils, bubble baths, etc. should be chosen with care. Again, check the ingredients and avoid using harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin.
